US Envoy Shuns Polish Parliament Speaker Over Trump Criticism

The US Embassy in Poland has suspended contact with Poland’s parliamentary speaker after sharp criticism of former US President Donald Trump, escalating diplomatic tensions between Washington and Warsaw.

US Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose announced on Thursday that all official dealings with Wlodzimierz Czarzasty would end “immediately,” citing what he described as “outrageous and unprovoked” remarks aimed at Trump.

The dispute follows comments by Czarzasty rejecting Donald Trump’s long-standing bid for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Polish parliament speaker accused Trump of pursuing a “policy of force” in international relations, pointing to US tariffs on European countries, threats to seize Greenland, and claims that NATO allies failed to participate on the front lines in Afghanistan.

“This is a breach of the politics of principles and values, and often a breach of international law,” Czarzasty told reporters earlier this week.

US Ambassador Defends Trump, Warns Against Damaging US-Poland Relations
In response, Ambassador Rose said the remarks undermined strong US-Polish relations and disrespected a US president who, in his view, had significantly supported Poland.

“We will not permit anyone to harm US-Polish relations nor disrespect President Trump, who has done so much for Poland and the Polish people,” Rose wrote on X.

Despite the diplomatic rebuke, Czarzasty remained defiant, reiterating that while he respects the United States as a key ally, he would not reverse his position on Trump or the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I continue to respect the United States as a key partner of Poland,” Czarzasty wrote on X. “However, I will not change my position on these fundamental issues for Polish women and men.”

This is not the first time Wlodzimierz Czarzasty has criticized Donald Trump publicly. In late January, he joined other senior Polish politicians in condemning Trump’s claim that the United States “never needed” NATO allies.

The remarks were particularly sensitive in Poland, where 43 Polish soldiers and one civil servant died while serving in the US-led NATO mission in Afghanistan.

Czarzasty leads Poland’s New Left party, a member of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-European governing coalition. The coalition also includes President Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist leader and outspoken supporter of Donald Trump—highlighting growing political and ideological divisions within Poland’s leadership.
