National News – The United Nations has raised fresh concerns over global press safety, revealing that about 85% of crimes committed against journalists remain unresolved.

This was disclosed by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, on May 3, 2026, during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day.

The annual event highlights the importance of independent journalism and the dangers media professionals face worldwide.

Guterres stressed that press freedom is essential to democracy, serving as a watchdog that ensures accountability and transparency in governance.

He referenced the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, which laid the foundation for global advocacy for a free and independent press.

According to him, the growing trend of attacks, censorship, and legal harassment against journalists reflects a dangerous erosion of truth and accountability.

Explaining why this matters, the UN chief warned that when reliable information becomes scarce, public trust declines and misinformation spreads rapidly.

He noted that emerging technologies, economic challenges, and deliberate manipulation of information are intensifying threats against journalism globally.

Addressing how journalists are affected, Guterres said many media workers risk their lives daily, especially in conflict zones, where they are often deliberately targeted.

He added that journalists are not only victims during wars but also in peaceful societies where powerful individuals seek to avoid scrutiny.

He called on governments and stakeholders worldwide to strengthen legal protections for journalists and ensure perpetrators of crimes against them are held accountable.

According to him, safeguarding journalists is crucial for maintaining peace, protecting human rights, and promoting sustainable development.

Guterres concluded by urging global cooperation to create a safer environment where truth can thrive and journalists can operate without fear.
