National News – Ikenga Ugochinyere, member representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State in the House of Representatives, has called on opposition parties in Nigeria to end internal disputes and build unity ahead of future elections.

He issued the statement on Monday, May 11, 2026, in Abuja, criticising rising public disagreements among opposition blocs including the African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress, and the Labour Party.

He said persistent clashes, accusations, and media attacks among opposition leaders were weakening collective strength and undermining Nigeria’s democratic balance.

Nigerians expect the opposition to provide credible alternatives, especially on insecurity, unemployment, inflation, and governance challenges.

He urged unity, dialogue, and strategic alliances, saying ego-driven politics and internal rivalries could further weaken opposition influence ahead of elections.

The lawmaker stressed that effective opposition should focus on policy-driven engagement rather than insults or public feuds.

He added that stronger collaboration would help present better democratic checks on government and improve governance outcomes.

He also noted that continued fragmentation within opposition ranks could discourage voter participation and weaken accountability.

He called for structured dialogue among party leaders to resolve disputes internally rather than through media confrontations.

Political observers say such concerns highlight growing fragmentation within opposition parties as Nigeria moves closer to the next general election cycle.

Unity remains central to strengthening democratic opposition and improving accountability in governance across Nigeria.

He reiterated that opposition politics should focus on issue-based engagement, reduce hostility, and rebuild public trust ahead of future elections.

Analysts believe that sustained unity efforts could enhance policy alternatives and provide stronger checks on the ruling party’s performance.

The call comes amid increasing political realignments and heightened expectations from citizens for better governance outcomes.
