National News – Lagos State has captured 6,465,667 residents under its digital identity registration exercise through the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency database, according to officials.
The Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Tobosun Alake, disclosed this during the ongoing ministerial press briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s seventh year in office in Lagos on May 13, 2026.
He explained that the breakdown includes 4,058,333 adults and 2,407,224 children, making the Lagos Identity Card (LAG ID) project central to the state’s governance strategy for improved public service delivery.
He added that the system allows collaboration between government institutions and private sector stakeholders while maintaining a centralized infrastructure for accurate data management and improved decision-making.
On technology, he noted that digital traffic enforcement has recorded about 86,000 recent tracking cases and 737,000 cumulatively, while Lagos records about 250,000 monthly online visits across government platforms.
He further disclosed that about 3,000 kilometres of fibre optic duct infrastructure has been deployed across Lagos, including Alimosho, Ikorodu, and Ibeju-Lekki, with plans to expand to 5,000 kilometres through private partnerships.
Officials stressed that the digital identity programme remains a key pillar of Lagos State’s long-term smart city agenda, helping to improve security, planning efficiency, and social service delivery.
They said the database is expected to support future innovations in health, education, transportation, and taxation systems by providing reliable demographic insights.
The government also urged residents who are yet to be captured to complete their registration to ensure inclusivity and accurate representation in state planning processes.
Lagos continues to position itself as a leading digital governance hub in Nigeria, with authorities reaffirming commitment to expanding identity management infrastructure and improving data-driven public service delivery across the state.
