National News – The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in Ibadan, Oyo State, called for the integration of traditional medicine with orthodox healthcare.
He said the move would improve healthcare delivery and preserve indigenous medical knowledge.
The monarch made the call during a visit by the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Oyo State branch, at the Olubadan Palace.
He said traditional medicine remains widely used because it is affordable, accessible, and culturally accepted.
He urged stronger collaboration between traditional practitioners and modern medical professionals.
According to him, such integration would improve safety and effectiveness in healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
PSN chairman Segun Ajanaku congratulated the monarch on his ascension.
He also noted progress in the association’s projects and healthcare initiatives in Oyo State.
Ajanaku announced the completion of a new pharmacists’ storey building in Ibadan.
He described it as the first of its kind in Nigeria and invited the monarch to its inauguration on May 21, 2026.
The association also requested approval for its annual medical outreach at the palace on September 25, 2026.
Traditional rulers and health professionals present supported stronger collaboration.
Experts say integrating both medical systems could improve access to care, especially in rural communities.
They also believe it could reduce reliance on unregulated herbal practices.
Stakeholders agreed that combining traditional and modern medicine could strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and support innovation in drug development.
