National News – Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may conduct a presidential primary election ahead of 2027 if efforts to reach a consensus candidate fail.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV on Wednesday, the former Vice President explained that the party’s first strategy is to agree on a single candidate, but a primary remains the alternative if consensus proves impossible.

Atiku, a leading figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, confirmed he is willing to support any candidate that emerges through either process.

He also declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt at the presidency, bringing an end to his long political career.

According to him, the decision is final and reflects the high stakes of the upcoming election cycle.

Addressing concerns about his relevance, Atiku argued that his experience in governance, including his tenure under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, remains valuable.

He noted that while younger leaders have held positions of authority, their performance has not always met public expectations, stressing the need for mentorship and political exposure.

On coalition building, Atiku revealed he is spearheading a broad alliance involving members of major parties, including the APC, PDP, NNPP, and Labour Party.

He explained that Nigeria’s political history shows that strong coalitions are key to electoral success, adding that the North remains his primary support base.

The former Vice President also criticised President Bola Tinubu, describing his administration as disappointing and warning about the weakening of democratic institutions due to excessive concentration of power.

He further advocated constitutional reforms, particularly the formalisation of zoning to ensure fairness in leadership rotation.

As preparations for 2027 intensify, Atiku maintained that the responsibility for Nigeria’s future leadership will ultimately pass to a new generation, even as he positions himself for what he described as his final political battle.
