National News – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), following allegations of political bias linked to a purported pro-President Bola Tinubu post from 2023.

The controversy emerged after claims surfaced that a social media account allegedly connected to Amupitan contained partisan content, raising questions about his neutrality as Nigeria’s chief electoral umpire.

The ADC argues that such allegations undermine public trust in the electoral process and cast doubt on the credibility of future elections.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC maintained that any hint of partisanship by the head of the electoral body is unacceptable.

The party stressed that Nigeria’s electoral umpire must remain independent and be perceived as neutral to ensure credible elections.

According to the ADC, attempts to erase or manipulate digital footprints connected to the alleged posts deepen concerns over transparency and accountability.

The party described the situation as a serious threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process, warning that public confidence in upcoming elections could be compromised if the issue is not addressed.

Amupitan has denied ownership of the account and refuted the allegations, insisting he has no ties to any political party.

However, the ADC dismissed his explanation, insisting that the matter demands a more thorough investigation and accountability.

The party further disclosed plans to escalate the issue by submitting petitions to relevant institutions, including international bodies and professional associations, to ensure the matter is fully addressed.

It emphasized that the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system must be preserved ahead of future polls.
