Afenifere Raises Alarm Over Rising Terror Attacks

National News – The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has warned of escalating insecurity across parts of Nigeria, particularly in the South-West, highlighting a surge in kidnappings, killings, and community invasions.

The warning was issued on Tuesday by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, who expressed concern over repeated attacks in Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara, and neighbouring states.

The group cited several incidents, including the kidnapping of a trader in Ibadan, abduction of electricity workers along the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode road, attacks on families in Ondo and Ekiti, and killings of farmers in Oyo communities like Tede and Ago-Are.

It also noted the killing of military police officers in Kwara State and attacks on religious centres, markets, and homes.

Afenifere further lamented the growing insecurity affecting National Youth Service Corps members, recalling cases of corps members abducted while travelling to orientation camps.

The organisation urged the Federal Government to review the NYSC scheme, suggesting that participants should serve within their home states to reduce exposure to risks.

The group also questioned the effectiveness of security agencies, pointing out that heavily armed attackers moving in convoys on motorbikes often evade detection.

It alleged possible collaboration between criminals and influential individuals within communities and institutions.

In addressing the crisis, Afenifere recommended adopting non-kinetic strategies alongside military action.

It also called for a crackdown on illegal mining activities, which it claims often follow the displacement of local communities after attacks.

The organisation concluded that urgent and decisive action is needed to prevent further deterioration of security across the country.
