ALGON Endorses Tinubu for Second Term Bid

By Our Correspondent

National News – The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 general elections, following resolutions reached at its 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Sunday, May 3, 2026.

The decision, announced in a communiqué issued after the meeting and chaired by ALGON National President Bello Lawal, involved representatives from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The endorsement was formally moved by former ALGON president Alabi Kolade David and seconded by the Plateau State ALGON chairman Anani Hamisu Mohammed.

According to the association, the move is driven by perceived gains under the Renewed Hope Agenda, especially improvements in fiscal capacity and local government autonomy, which ALGON says have strengthened grassroots governance across Nigeria.

The group stated that continuity in leadership would help deepen development at the grassroots level and ensure sustained reforms in local administration.

It also expressed a vote of confidence in its current national leadership, reaffirming unity within the association.

However, the meeting also addressed disciplinary matters, suspending three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct.

Those affected include Zakari Iliyasu of Agwara LGA in Niger State, Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi of Kaiama LGA in Kwara State, and Abba Shehu Tambuwal of Tambuwal LGA in Sokoto State.

ALGON accused them of impersonation, abuse of constitutional provisions, and actions contrary to the association’s interests, warning stakeholders not to recognize them as representatives.

The endorsement and disciplinary actions highlight ALGON’s dual focus on political alignment and internal governance reform as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 election cycle.

Political analysts note that the endorsement reflects growing alignment between local government leadership and the federal administration, with implications for grassroots political structure, governance stability, and the 2027 electoral landscape.

The development underscores ALGON’s role as a key stakeholder in Nigeria’s decentralized governance system, particularly in shaping policy direction, fiscal reforms, and local service delivery under ongoing national reforms, reaffirming grassroots influence ahead of 2027 general elections.
