National News – The All Progressives Grand Alliance has clarified its political stance ahead of the 2027 elections, stating it is backing only the re-election bid of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and not candidates of the All Progressives Congress in Anambra State.
This position was made public on April 26, 2026, by APGA chieftain Chinedu Obigwe, amid growing confusion over campaign messaging in the state.
The clarification comes after campaign posters surfaced featuring Tinubu alongside Chukwuma Soludo and various APC aspirants.
These posters suggested a broader alliance under the slogan “progressives are working together,” raising questions among voters about a possible political merger or endorsement.
According to Obigwe, the interpretation is misleading.
He explained that APGA’s support is strictly limited to Tinubu’s presidential re-election due to an existing working relationship between the Anambra State government and the federal administration.
However, the party remains committed to fielding and supporting its own candidates for Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats within the state.
This distinction highlights a strategic balancing act.
While APGA aligns with the presidency at the national level, it seeks to maintain dominance locally.
Political observers note that such dual positioning is not uncommon in Nigeria’s fluid party system, where alliances can shift depending on electoral priorities.
Locally, reactions have been mixed. Some Anambra residents view the clarification as necessary to prevent voter confusion, while others argue it exposes deeper fractures within the “progressive” bloc.
Critics also suggest that APC aspirants may have deliberately leveraged Tinubu’s popularity to boost their campaigns.
The implications are significant.
By drawing a clear line, APGA reinforces its independence and electoral ambitions in Anambra, signaling a potentially competitive race in 2027.
It also underscores the complexity of Nigerian politics, where cooperation at one level does not always translate to unified electoral strategies.
Ultimately, APGA’s message is direct: support Tinubu for president, but vote APGA down-ballot — a formula that could reshape alliances and voter expectations in the coming elections.
