National News – Éric Chelle has revealed plans to scout top talents from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and Nigerian players abroad ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup.
The tournament will take place from May 26 to May 30 at The Valley in London, bringing together Nigeria, Jamaica, India, and Zimbabwe.
Chelle disclosed that the competition offers a strategic opportunity to assess new players while strengthening the national team’s depth and competitiveness.
The Super Eagles coach explained that the Unity Cup, which is played outside the FIFA international window, allows him to experiment with fresh talents.
He confirmed that standout NPFL performers and uncapped Nigerian players in Europe will be invited to participate.
According to him, this move aims to identify promising players who can contribute to the team’s long-term success while giving them valuable international exposure.
Chelle also clarified that established first-team players will return for high-profile international friendlies scheduled in June against Portugal and Poland.
He noted that these matches are crucial for improving Nigeria’s global ranking and maintaining competitive momentum.
By balancing new inclusions with experienced players, the coaching crew hopes to build a stronger and more cohesive squad.
The Unity Cup, now in its fourth edition, celebrates countries with strong diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.
Nigeria enters the tournament as defending champions, having won the previous edition.
The opening semi-final will see Nigeria face Zimbabwe, while Jamaica will take on India in the second fixture.
Winners will progress to the final, while the losing teams will battle for third place.
Chelle emphasised that his scouting efforts will involve attending domestic league matches and monitoring Nigerian players abroad.
He believes this approach will ensure fairness, broaden selection opportunities, and enhance team performance.
With a mix of local and international talents, Nigeria aims to retain the Unity Cup title and continue building a formidable squad.
