National News – The Governor of Monday Okpebholo has reaffirmed a stronger partnership with the Federal Government to accelerate water infrastructure and tighten security across vulnerable sites in Edo State.
The commitment was made on Tuesday in Benin City when the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Terlumun Utsev, led officials from the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority on a visit.
Discussions focused on improving water access, addressing vandalism, and ensuring timely completion of ongoing projects.
Okpebholo stressed that collaboration is key to delivering results, especially in projects like the Jattu Dam in Etsako West, which is expected to ease water shortages in Edo North.
He acknowledged concerns over vandalism and promised stronger security measures, including plans for a Forward Operating Base in volatile areas like Obayantor.
From the Federal Government’s side, Utsev highlighted persistent challenges such as encroachment on project sites and threats to infrastructure.
He urged Edo State to meet its 25 per cent counterpart funding obligation to prevent delays and safeguard investments.
Residents in affected communities say water scarcity remains a daily struggle, with some relying on costly private sources.
Many view the renewed partnership as overdue, noting that past projects often stalled due to funding gaps and poor maintenance.
Security experts also argue that without tackling vandalism and illegal encroachment, infrastructure gains may be short-lived.
If implemented effectively, the partnership could improve water supply, boost agriculture, and enhance rural development.
However, success hinges on timely funding, transparency, and sustained security enforcement.
The move also aligns with national development priorities under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, signalling a broader push for infrastructure renewal.
Ultimately, the Edo-FG collaboration reflects a growing recognition that development projects require both funding and protection to deliver lasting impact.
