National News – Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been granted bail by a Federal High Court in Kaduna over alleged corruption charges filed by the ICPC, but he remains in custody pending strict bail conditions.
The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, ruled on the bail application of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who is standing trial for alleged corruption, abuse of office and fraud brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
It was presided over by Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, who granted bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum, requiring that one surety be a civil servant not below Grade Level 15 and the other a recognised traditional ruler.
The court also included the condition that El-Rufai must remain in ICPC custody until all bail terms are fulfilled, deposit passports of sureties, and is restricted from making public comments relating to the case while being mandated to attend all court sittings.
The ICPC had earlier arraigned him alongside a business executive, but the charge was later amended, leaving only the former governor to face trial across multiple courts, highlighting ongoing legal proceedings in Kaduna State and Federal High Courts.
Justice Aikawa stated that the bail was “strict and extensive,” stressing that the defendant will remain in custody until compliance is fully verified by the court.
The ruling follows earlier adjournments in related proceedings, with hearings spread across Kaduna State High Court and the Federal High Court involving allegations of abuse of office, fraud and undue advantage.
Observers note that the case has drawn national attention due to El-Rufai’s prominence as former governor of Kaduna State, with the ICPC pursuing corruption-related charges aimed at addressing alleged abuse of office and financial misconduct.
The court fixed conditions intended to ensure accountability, including surety requirements and travel restrictions, while the next phase of proceedings will determine compliance and continuation of the trial in 2026.
El-Rufai’s son and political associates confirmed the bail ruling, though his release remains pending until all financial and procedural conditions set by the court are satisfied.
This development underscores ongoing scrutiny of high-profile political figures in Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive.
