National News – Marie-Louise Eta has made history in the Bundesliga after becoming the first woman to coach a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
She was appointed interim head coach of Union Berlin until the end of the season following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart.
The decision came after a 3-1 loss to FC Heidenheim, leaving the club struggling for form in 2026.
Union Berlin currently sit mid-table, 11 points above relegation, but have managed just two wins in their last 14 matches, prompting urgent changes.
Club director Horst Heldt explained that recent performances forced the club to seek a fresh approach to secure safety before the season ends.
Eta, who previously served as assistant coach and led the team during a suspension period for former manager Nenad Bjelica, brings familiarity and continuity to the role.
A former German youth international and UEFA Women’s Champions League winner with Turbine Potsdam, Eta has consistently broken barriers.
She also coached Union Berlin’s U19 squad and is scheduled to take charge of the club’s women’s team later in the year.
Her promotion highlights growing inclusivity in football management.
Eta acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting that the club is not yet safe from relegation.
However, she expressed confidence in securing crucial points in the remaining fixtures.
Fans have largely welcomed her appointment, with reports indicating overwhelming support.
Her achievement adds to a growing list of women managing men’s teams in Europe, reinforcing progress toward gender equality in football.
