National News – Teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory wing, have begun an indefinite strike starting Monday in Abuja, following unresolved disputes with the FCT Administration over welfare, unpaid entitlements, and promotion issues.

The decision was announced by the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) after an emergency meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja on Friday.

The union explained that the action followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which ended without full resolution of their demands.

The teachers acknowledged partial implementation of the new minimum wage and payment of nine months’ arrears but insisted that key issues remain unresolved, including the publication and implementation of a committee report submitted in August 2025.

The committee was set up to harmonise outstanding entitlements and resolve recurring industrial disputes affecting teachers.

SWEC further directed all teachers to stay at home until their demands are fully addressed, advising parents to keep their children away from schools for safety.

It also demanded the removal of restrictive promotion conditions and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise for eligible teachers.

The union stressed that repeated delays and silence from authorities despite earlier negotiations and interventions led to the decision.

Schools across Abuja are expected to remain shut indefinitely until government action is taken.
