National News – The Federal Government has commenced construction of a 2.5-kilometre rural road project in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria, designed to enhance rural connectivity, stimulate local commerce, and improve access to essential services such as education, agriculture, and healthcare.

The announcement was made by the Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State at the Federal Character Commission, Peter Ogbonna Eze, during a media interaction held in Abuja on Wednesday, April 16, 2026.

He explained that the intervention is part of efforts to bring federal presence closer to rural communities and support inclusive development across Nigeria.

The road project links three communities—Aji, Isiugwu, and Ufodo in Igboeze North Local Government Area—and is expected to strengthen socio-economic ties with neighbouring Kogi State.

According to Eze, the project was initiated through his office but funded by the Federal Government.

It features asphalt surfacing, double drainage systems, and improved engineering design to ensure durability, reduce erosion risks, and withstand seasonal rainfall challenges common in the region.

Eze stated that the first kilometre of the road is nearing completion, with final asphalt work to be followed by commissioning once standards are met.

He noted that the initiative reflects the infrastructure-focused governance style of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and aligns with broader national development priorities aimed at improving rural transportation networks and reducing isolation in underserved communities.

He further reiterated that the Federal Character Commission will intensify monitoring of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to ensure compliance with federal character principles in recruitment and operations.

According to him, agencies that fail to comply risk sanctions and possible legal action under the Federal Character Act.

He added that improved road infrastructure would enhance access to farms, schools, and markets, ultimately boosting livelihoods, reducing travel hardship, and supporting economic growth in rural Enugu communities.

This project underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to bridging infrastructure gaps in rural Nigeria, promoting inclusive growth, and strengthening inter-community trade routes across the South-East region.

It is expected to contribute to long-term socio-economic development and improved mobility for residents.
