National News – The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced payment of long-overdue salary arrears to members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, addressing a key welfare issue affecting the country’s healthcare workforce.
The arrears, linked to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review, cover outstanding payments ranging from one to six months.
The development was confirmed on April 14, 2026, by NARD’s Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr Abdulmajid Ibrahim, who stated that disbursement has already begun across several centres.
According to the association, many doctors have started receiving payments, while others are expected to be credited soon.
The Federal Government initiated the payments to resolve long-standing salary disputes and prevent potential industrial action within Nigeria’s fragile health sector.
However, Ibrahim disclosed that the August component of the arrears is facing minor administrative delays, which could extend payment timelines by one to two weeks.
The CONMESS salary structure review has been a recurring source of tension between doctors and the government, with delays previously triggering strikes that disrupted medical services nationwide.
Resident doctors, who play a critical role in tertiary healthcare delivery, have consistently raised concerns about unpaid salaries, hazardous working conditions, and poor welfare packages.
Healthcare stakeholders say the delay in settling arrears has contributed significantly to the ongoing brain drain in Nigeria’s medical sector, as many doctors migrate abroad in search of better opportunities.
The government’s move to begin payments is seen as an effort to restore confidence, improve morale, and stabilize the healthcare system.
NARD leadership urged members who have not yet received their payments to remain patient and report unresolved issues through appropriate channels for quick resolution.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for improved welfare and timely remuneration for doctors across the country.
