National News – The Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has called for stronger collaboration among the media, public institutions, and stakeholders to tackle the growing threat of disinformation and misinformation in Nigeria.

The appeal was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day event held in Abuja on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Idris stressed that false information is undermining public trust, national unity, and democratic stability.

He noted that the government is actively working with media organisations and international partners to promote responsible journalism and ensure accurate information dissemination.

According to him, press freedom remains a constitutional right, but must be exercised with responsibility and accountability.

He further explained that the Tinubu administration has introduced measures to improve transparency and access to information.

These include stronger enforcement of the Freedom of Information Act, increased media engagement, and improved public communication systems.

Idris also highlighted Nigeria’s partnership with UNESCO in establishing the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja, aimed at equipping citizens with critical thinking skills to navigate the digital information space.

Addressing journalists, the minister urged adherence to ethics, professionalism, and fairness, stating that the credibility of the press depends on truthful reporting and responsible content consumption.

In her remarks, Permanent Secretary Binyerem Ukaire emphasised the urgency of coordinated responses to misinformation, especially with the rapid expansion of digital platforms.

She said the event provided an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and build a more inclusive and informed society.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to working with civil society, media organisations, and global partners to create a reliable information ecosystem that supports democracy, unity, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
