National News – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State has urged motorists to reduce speed and exercise caution during the rainy season to prevent avoidable road crashes across highways, especially on slippery and pothole-filled roads.

The advisory was issued by the Ogun Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota on Monday, April 20, 2026.

Ogunjobi warned that wet roads reduce tyre grip, making speeding dangerous.

He explained that the warning is necessary as rains intensify across Nigeria, particularly in Ogun State, which is expected to experience prolonged rainfall and possible flash flooding this year.

He advised drivers to maintain at least double or triple the usual following distance to allow sufficient braking time in emergencies.

Motorists were also urged to ensure proper vehicle maintenance, including functional brake systems, headlights, indicators, and windscreen wipers before embarking on journeys.

Ogunjobi further cautioned road users against crossing flooded roads or driving through running water, noting that such actions often lead to preventable fatalities.

He recommended that motorists park safely during heavy downpours and wait for improved visibility before continuing their trips.

The FRSC referenced forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency indicating variable rainfall patterns across the country, stressing that drivers must adopt defensive driving techniques to reduce crash risks during the rainy season.

Authorities emphasized that compliance with speed regulations and safety guidelines remains critical to reducing road traffic injuries and fatalities during adverse weather conditions.

The FRSC also called on commercial and private drivers to prioritise safety over haste, especially on highways linking major towns across Ogun State.

Residents were also encouraged to stay informed through weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel when heavy rainfall is predicted to reduce exposure to road hazards.

This advisory highlights ongoing road safety efforts by the FRSC to address seasonal accident risks, ensure safer highways, and protect lives and property across Nigeria during the rainy period.
