National News – The Federal Road Safety Corps has urged motorists across Nigeria to adopt defensive driving habits and carry out routine vehicle inspections as the rainy season begins.

The warning was issued on Monday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

According to the FRSC spokesman, the rainy season often increases the risk of road crashes because of slippery roads, poor visibility and reduced vehicle control.

He advised drivers to conduct regular safety checks before leaving their homes to ensure their vehicles remain roadworthy during wet weather conditions.

Ohaeri stressed that tyres are among the most important safety components of any vehicle, warning that worn-out or faulty tyres could lead to accidents.

He also advised motorists to inspect their brakes, headlamps, rear lights and windscreen wipers before embarking on any trip, especially at night or during heavy rainfall.

The FRSC official explained that defensive driving involves staying alert, anticipating dangers and responding carefully even when other road users make mistakes.

He noted that motorists should remain cautious at bends, junctions and busy highways where accidents are more likely to occur during rainfall.

He further warned against distractions while driving, saying that poor concentration and negligence contribute significantly to avoidable crashes during the rainy season.

Ohaeri urged drivers to maintain full attention on the road and obey traffic regulations to ensure safer journeys.

The corps maintained that road safety is a shared responsibility involving drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

It added that proper vehicle maintenance and responsible driving behaviour remain critical to reducing accidents and protecting lives during the rainy season and beyond.
