National News – A tragic attack by suspected herders has left a community in shock in Asa village, Okelade, within Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, where a 47-year-old traditional chief, Mutairu Oladosu, was brutally killed while working on his tomato farm.
The incident occurred last Friday and has heightened fears among residents who say insecurity is worsening in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers arrived in large numbers with over 300 cattle and launched an unprovoked assault on the victim.
Oladosu, who held the title of Otun Balogun of Oluode Okelade, was reportedly on his farm with one of his daughters when he was overpowered and killed with dangerous weapons.
Confirming the incident in Ibadan, the Okelade of Okelade, Oba Wahab Olabamiji, explained that the community had been grappling with repeated invasions by suspected herders.
He noted that beyond destroying farmlands through grazing, the attackers have become a major threat to lives, forcing residents to live in constant fear.
The monarch added that one suspect had been arrested and handed over to the police, while others involved in the attack remain at large.
Community leaders have since visited the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, to report the incident and seek urgent intervention.
Reacting, Ladoja confirmed that he had invited the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, to address the situation.
The police chief assured that investigations were ongoing and that justice would be served.
He also promised intensified efforts to apprehend other suspects and prevent a recurrence.
Residents say the attack underscores the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect rural communities from violent herders and restore confidence among farmers.
