Atletico Madrid forward Ademola Lookman played a pivotal role in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday, providing a perfect rehearsal for the upcoming Copa del Rey final on April 18 in Sevilla.
Lookman, a key figure for the Super Eagles, started the match and impressed before being substituted in the 53rd minute, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.2.
The win marked Atletico’s third consecutive La Liga triumph, consolidating their third-place position with 54 points from 27 games.
The match ignited early, with Alexander Sorloth giving Atletico an initial lead against his former club.
Carlos Soler quickly restored parity with a stunning left-foot strike, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.
Despite a fast-paced first half, neither team could gain a decisive advantage, although Lookman and Giuliano Simeone consistently troubled Sociedad’s defense.
The second half delivered the high-octane action fans expected.
Nico Gonzalez put Atletico ahead after an exquisite back-heel assist from Antoine Griezmann, only for Mikel Oyarzabal to thunder in an equalizer moments later.
With ten minutes remaining, Gonzalez converted a penalty to seal the win, extending Atletico’s unbeaten run against Real Sociedad in La Liga to 13 matches.
While Atletico’s home form remains strong, their away performances will be a concern ahead of the Copa del Rey, as Sociedad has managed just three wins on the road this season.
The result gives Diego Simeone’s side confidence, setting the stage for an intense cup showdown next month.
