National News – The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on Nigerians to actively hold their elected representatives accountable and engage lawmakers on issues affecting their communities.
Speaking during the resumption of plenary at the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, Akpabio stressed that democratic governance can only thrive when citizens participate meaningfully in the legislative process.
Addressing fellow lawmakers at the National Assembly of Nigeria, the Senate President described the Senate as a “workshop of solutions” rather than merely a platform for political debate.
According to him, the upper legislative chamber is committed to developing policies and solutions that tackle the nation’s pressing challenges.
Akpabio urged citizens across the country to engage their representatives and communicate the concerns of their communities.
He explained that representation is a core pillar of democracy, allowing public grievances and local issues to be transformed into policies and government actions that benefit the people.
“The Senate is not just a theatre for debate; it is a place where solutions are developed,” he said.
“Citizens should bring their concerns to those elected to represent them so that problems affecting communities can be addressed through legislation and policy.”
The Senate President also acknowledged the growing influence of social media in shaping national conversations.
However, he emphasised that the legislative process remains the most effective channel for turning public concerns into practical and enforceable policies.
Akpabio further highlighted the importance of the national budget currently under consideration at the National Assembly.
He described the budget as a critical policy instrument that reflects the government’s priorities and determines how national resources are allocated to support development and public welfare.
According to him, the budget represents more than figures on paper; it outlines the direction of the nation’s development and the government’s commitment to improving the lives of citizens.
As lawmakers resume legislative activities, the Senate is expected to deliberate on key national issues, including the 2026 Appropriation Bill, constitutional amendments, and other policy reforms aimed at strengthening governance in Nigeria.
Akpabio concluded by urging senators to prioritise national interest above political differences, stressing that cooperation and responsible leadership are necessary to address Nigeria’s challenges and deliver meaningful progress for the country.
