A captivating family portrait of Sir Elton John, his husband David Furnish, and their teenage sons Zachary and Elijah has been unveiled at London’s National Portrait Gallery.
The photograph, captured by acclaimed US artist Catherine Opie, also features their two pet Labradors, Joseph and Jacob, in the family’s Windsor home library.
The portrait shows Sir Elton in a signature purple suit and pink-lensed glasses, Furnish in a green suit, and the boys in casual black T-shirts—one seated on the sofa’s arm and the other on the floor holding a dog toy.
The image joins a celebrated collection featuring British cultural icons including Sir David Beckham, Dame Judi Dench, Amy Winehouse, and Letitia Wright.
In a statement, Elton John and Furnish expressed their pride: “To have our family photographed by Catherine Opie and on display at the National Portrait Gallery is a huge honour.
We admire her work and are proud to have her images in this collection.” Opie’s 30-year career will also be celebrated in a separate exhibition at the gallery, starting this Friday.
The family portrait provides an intimate glimpse into their personal interests, with bookshelves behind them showcasing hundreds of biographies.
The collection spans legendary figures from Andy Warhol, Bruce Lee, and Tina Turner to historical leaders like Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, and Winston Churchill.
It also highlights Elton John’s passion for sport, featuring cricketers, cyclists, and footballers including Watford FC’s Troy Deeney.
The National Portrait Gallery describes the portrait as a milestone in celebrating LGBTQ+ representation, philanthropy, and contemporary photographic art.
The commission highlights both the cultural influence of Elton John and the artistic legacy of Catherine Opie.
This portrait not only documents one of the UK’s most iconic music legends but also underscores the evolving narrative of family, identity, and cultural contribution in modern British society.
