Gunmen have abducted Mr. Francis Igwe, the father of former Ebonyi State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kelechi Igwe, in what community members describe as a shocking early-morning kidnapping incident in Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State.
The elderly man was reportedly kidnapped on Sunday while driving to church in his hometown.
According to local sources, the attackers intercepted his vehicle along the road before forcefully taking him away.
Witnesses said the kidnappers arrived on a motorcycle and strategically blocked his car.
After double-crossing his vehicle, the armed men allegedly forced Mr. Igwe out and quickly whisked him away to an unknown destination.
Residents of the Ndufu-Alike community expressed fear and concern over the incident, noting that the abduction occurred in broad daylight.
Many locals say the situation highlights growing insecurity and the rising threat of kidnapping in parts of Nigeria.
The Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area, Sunday Nwankwo, confirmed the incident shortly after reports surfaced.
He stated that local authorities were already working with security agencies to track down the perpetrators and secure the victim’s safe release.
According to him, security operatives have begun gathering intelligence and coordinating efforts to locate the kidnappers.
“We are collaborating closely with security agencies to obtain necessary information that will help ensure the victim is rescued safely,” the council chairman said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ebonyi State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the kidnapping.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, were unsuccessful.
The abduction has sparked renewed concerns among residents about safety in rural communities across Ebonyi State.
Community leaders are urging security agencies to intensify patrols and strengthen surveillance in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, family members and residents remain hopeful that Mr. Igwe will be rescued unharmed as security operatives continue their search for the kidnappers.
Authorities are expected to release further updates as the investigation progresses.
