Popular Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun, has revealed that stepping into film production required bold financial decisions and significant risk, describing the move as one of the most challenging but rewarding choices of his career.

The entertainer, widely known as AY, made the disclosure while reacting to his recent Trailblazer recognition at the Silverbird Man of the Year Awards.

According to him, the honour represents years of dedication, resilience, and strategic expansion within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Speaking on the recognition, AY said the award validates the risks he took in moving beyond stand-up comedy to filmmaking and large-scale entertainment productions.

He said, “It is deeply humbling. This award validates years of risk-taking, innovation, and consistency.

Being recognised as a trailblazer shows that daring to expand beyond comedy into filmmaking and live entertainment was worth it.

For me, it is not a destination but motivation to keep raising the bar.”

Over the years, the comedian has built a strong brand across stand-up comedy, film production, and major entertainment events.

His involvement in Nollywood has also contributed to the growing international visibility of Nigerian films and creative talent.

Reflecting on his career journey, AY noted that his decision to venture into filmmaking required heavy financial commitments and came with doubts from many quarters.

However, he said careful planning, studying the entertainment market, and building strong partnerships helped him succeed.

“Transitioning into film production was a major risk. There were doubts and heavy financial commitments, but I believed in growth beyond stand-up comedy.

I studied the market, built strong partnerships, and remained persistent. That decision expanded my brand globally,” he said.

Offering advice to aspiring creatives, the filmmaker stressed the importance of discipline, capacity building, and understanding the business side of entertainment.

“Build capacity before chasing applause. Talent alone is not enough.

Learn the business, stay disciplined, remain consistent, and never rely on shortcuts. Nigeria can be challenging, but it rewards resilience and structure,” he added.

Looking ahead, AY revealed that he is focused on expanding his entertainment platforms globally.

One of his upcoming projects is the next edition of his flagship comedy show, AY Live, scheduled to hold on Easter Sunday, April 5.

He also noted that he is developing new film and digital projects aimed at strengthening the global reach of Nigerian content while supporting young creatives through The AY Open Mic Comedy Challenge.
