The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated essential water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and dignity kits to support victims of the recent terrorist attack in Woro Community, Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State.
The donation was handed over to the Kwara State Government at the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) office in Ilorin, reinforcing ongoing humanitarian relief efforts for affected residents.
On February 3, militants on motorcycles attacked Woro around 6 pm, indiscriminately shooting residents and setting homes on fire.
The attack left at least 160 people dead and over 160 others abducted, creating an urgent need for emergency humanitarian assistance.
During the handover, Secretary to the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency, Saadu Magaji, expressed gratitude to UNICEF, stating that the donation would significantly support the victims.
He highlighted the swift response of the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led government in providing immediate relief.
Commissioner for Water Resources, Yunusa Usman, described the donation as “commendable,” noting that the kits would meet some of the community’s urgent needs while urging continued support from NGOs, international partners, and private individuals.
Gerida Birukila, Chief of Field Office for UNICEF in Kaduna, emphasized the importance of the intervention after observing the trauma experienced by the residents.
UNICEF provided 400 dignity kits initially, with another 1,000 kits scheduled to arrive soon.
The kits include sanitary pads, water treatment materials, water storage containers, and hygiene supplies, ensuring access to safe water and improved sanitation.
UNICEF has also extended health services to cater to the needs of survivors.
RUWASSA General Manager Olufemi commended UNICEF for its timely support and encouraged sustained interventions for vulnerable communities across Kwara State.
The state government’s open-door policy has strengthened collaboration with international organizations, enabling agencies like UNICEF and the World Health Organization to actively participate in local development and emergency relief initiatives.
This timely humanitarian intervention provides relief and hope to Woro residents, highlighting the importance of global partnerships in addressing crises and supporting affected communities in Kwara State.
