National News – Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have initiated reconciliation talks following the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria on the party’s leadership crisis.
The discussions aim to prevent further division within the party and ensure that it remains strong enough to contest the 2027 general elections.
Sources within the party revealed that both camps have begun intensive consultations to determine whether to form a harmonised caretaker committee or organise a unity national convention.
The move comes after the appellate court nullified the PDP national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, which had produced a new National Working Committee.
Leaders within the party say reconciliation has become urgent as the legal battle threatens the PDP’s ability to present candidates in upcoming elections.
Members aligned with the Wike camp say the minister has already signalled his readiness for peace, urging stakeholders to prioritise the party’s survival over internal rivalries.
An insider familiar with the negotiations explained that discussions are focusing on creating a political compromise that would stabilise the party structure and restore confidence among members across the country.
Party leaders believe that without unity, the PDP risks weakening its position as Nigeria’s main opposition party ahead of 2027.
Acting National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu assured party aspirants that the leadership crisis would not affect their chances of contesting elections on the PDP platform.
According to him, the caretaker committee plans to organise a national convention before the end of March to establish a new National Working Committee that will guide the party toward future elections.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki also urged party leaders to accept the court’s decision and work collectively to rebuild unity.
He warned that prolonged litigation could jeopardise the ambitions of many party members preparing for future elections.
Meanwhile, PDP leaders including Board of Trustees Chairman Adolphus Wabara and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde say the ruling presents an opportunity for the party to restructure and emerge stronger.
Party officials emphasised that reconciliation must preserve the PDP’s independence as an opposition party and ensure it fields candidates in the 2027 presidential, governorship and legislative elections.
