National News – A powerful tribute album celebrating the life and legacy of legendary Irish songwriter Shane MacGowan has been announced, bringing together some of the biggest names in global music.
The project, titled “20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan,” features performances from artists including Bruce Springsteen, Hozier and Jessie Buckley.
The tribute album is scheduled for release in November and aims to honour MacGowan’s influential songwriting and cultural impact.
MacGowan, best known as the frontman of The Pogues, died in November 2023 at the age of 65 after a prolonged period of ill health.
Widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most distinctive lyricists, he built a legacy through songs capturing the struggles, humour and spirit of Irish immigrant life.
His music blended folk traditions with punk energy, creating timeless classics that continue to influence generations of musicians.
The tribute album’s first single is a cover of MacGowan’s classic track “A Rainy Night in Soho,” performed by Springsteen.
The rock icon described MacGowan’s songwriting as raw, deeply human and unapologetically honest.
Reflecting on a visit with the late musician before his passing, Springsteen praised MacGowan’s artistic brilliance and said his songs would continue to resonate for generations.
Other contributors to the album include Tom Waits, Primal Scream, Steve Earle, and David Gray. Actor Johnny Depp also appears on the album in a duet with Irish singer Imelda May.
Additional artists contributing to the tribute include The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Libertines and model-turned-performer Kate Moss.
The album is overseen by MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, who described the project as a heartfelt celebration of her husband’s music and spirit.
She said the family was deeply grateful to the artists who contributed to honouring his legacy.
In a further tribute to MacGowan’s compassion for vulnerable communities, half of the royalties from the album will be donated to the Dublin Simon Community, supporting people experiencing homelessness in Dublin.
With its remarkable lineup and emotional significance, the album is expected to introduce MacGowan’s timeless songwriting to new audiences while celebrating the enduring influence of one of Ireland’s most iconic musicians.
