National News – Turkish Airlines has reaffirmed its commitment to employee welfare following a protest that disrupted its operations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The airline urged labour unions to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than protests that could disrupt aviation services and inconvenience passengers.
The demonstration was organised by the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), whose members picketed the airline over the alleged dismissal of seven union members.
The protest temporarily halted Turkish Airlines’ operations and forced many passengers scheduled to travel from Lagos to return home after flights were disrupted.
In a statement responding to the incident, Turkish Airlines acknowledged the right of workers and labour unions to express their concerns.
However, the airline described the picketing action as unfortunate, especially because discussions were already ongoing with union representatives to address the dispute.
According to the airline, constructive dialogue remains the best approach to resolving labour issues within the aviation sector.
The company noted that disruptive demonstrations could undermine ongoing negotiations and negatively affect operations, passengers, and industry stability.
Turkish Airlines also emphasised that its operations in Nigeria strictly follow national labour regulations and aviation industry guidelines.
The airline reiterated that it remains committed to maintaining a safe working environment for employees while ensuring the highest safety standards for passengers and crew.
The airline further stressed that safety and operational stability remain its top priorities.
It warned that if disruptions continue or operational conditions fail to meet safety requirements, the company may be forced to reconsider its flight schedule.
Despite the tension surrounding the protest, Turkish Airlines said it remains open to constructive engagement with NUATE and other relevant stakeholders.
Management expressed confidence that ongoing dialogue will lead to a responsible and mutually acceptable resolution.
Industry observers note that labour disputes within the aviation sector can significantly affect airline operations, airport activities, and passenger travel plans.
As negotiations continue, stakeholders are hopeful that both the airline and union representatives will reach an agreement that protects workers’ rights while ensuring uninterrupted airline services in Nigeria.
