National News – A local hunter thwarted an attempted theft of solar-powered streetlights in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, along the Bulou-Orua–Ebedebiri Road in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The suspect duo, identified as Ayebademone Peremobowei and Peres John, were reportedly intercepted while dismantling public lighting infrastructure installed to improve rural electrification and security in the area.

According to the Bayelsa State Police Command, the suspects—believed to be from nearby Tungbo community—were caught in the act after the hunter raised an alarm that alerted residents.

The swift response led to their arrest and subsequent transfer to the police headquarters in Yenagoa, where they are currently undergoing investigation and may face prosecution.

Police spokesperson DSP Musa Mohammed confirmed the incident, explaining that the suspects were apprehended before they could cart away the solar equipment.

Authorities emphasized that the arrest reflects ongoing efforts to curb vandalism of public assets across the state.

Residents of Sagbama have expressed growing concern over the repeated theft of solar streetlights, noting that more than 100 units installed under the Niger Delta Development Commission’s “Light Up Niger Delta” initiative have reportedly gone missing.

The project, designed to enhance safety, economic activities, and night-time visibility, has been significantly undermined by these acts of vandalism.

The development highlights a broader issue of infrastructure sabotage in the region, where critical public utilities are frequently targeted.

In a related incident in December 2024, two suspected vandals were electrocuted while attempting to steal streetlight poles, underscoring both the dangers and persistence of the crime.

Authorities are urging community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that collaboration between residents and security agencies remains crucial in protecting public investments and ensuring sustainable development.
