National News – The Ezinihite Mbaise Legislative Council in Imo State has suspended its Vice Chairman, Matthew Igbokwe, over alleged involvement in a car theft syndicate in Lagos.
The suspension, announced on April 13, 2026, followed his arrest by the Lagos State Police Command, raising serious concerns about misconduct and abuse of office.
According to council officials, Igbokwe was detained last week in Lagos during a police operation that dismantled a criminal network accused of stealing and dismantling vehicles for resale.
The Lagos Police spokesperson confirmed that the vice chairman is under active investigation for robbery-related offences and other criminal activities.
The council issued a seven-day impeachment notice before enforcing the indefinite suspension, citing multiple violations.
These include persistent absenteeism from official duties, unauthorized travel outside Imo State without council approval, and conduct deemed damaging to public trust.
Lawmakers said the decision was necessary to uphold accountability and maintain the integrity of local governance.
The motion to suspend Igbokwe was moved by Chief Whip Ajaa Echezolachi and supported by Deputy Leader Steven Echeta, receiving unanimous backing from all council members present.
Council Leader Mbechi Benson emphasized that the action aligns with the Imo State Local Government Administration Law No. 6 of 2022, as amended.
Officials also noted that the allegations have brought embarrassment to the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma, the local government leadership, and residents of Ezinihite Mbaise.
Meanwhile, the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, calling for a thorough and independent investigation into the case.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and further legal actions may follow depending on findings.
The case highlights growing concerns about accountability in public office and the need for strict enforcement of ethical standards among elected officials.
