National News – Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that he will consult widely before deciding whether to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Jonathan made the statement on Thursday in Abuja while addressing youth groups urging him to return to the race.
The former president said running for Nigeria’s highest office was a serious responsibility that required careful planning and broad consultations.
According to him, the presidency is “not a computer game,” stressing that leadership decisions must be taken with caution and national interest in mind.
Jonathan commended the youths for showing concern about the country’s future and encouraged them to remain active in promoting peace, democracy, and national development.
He explained that patriotic citizens must continue advocating for peaceful and credible elections to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
Speaking on the state of elections in the country, Jonathan expressed concern over Nigeria’s low voter turnout despite having one of Africa’s largest voting populations.
He noted that many eligible voters fail to participate during elections and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to study the causes of voter apathy.
The former president also challenged young Nigerians to become more involved politically by registering for voter cards and taking part in elections.
He warned that without credible elections, many qualified and responsible citizens would avoid politics entirely.
Jonathan further lamented the negative treatment many Nigerians experience abroad, linking the issue partly to years of leadership challenges.
He, however, assured supporters that he had listened to their appeal and would continue consulting before making any final decision on the 2027 presidential election.
Political observers believe Jonathan’s remarks could increase discussions ahead of the next general election as political groups continue searching for strong candidates capable of influencing Nigeria’s political landscape.
