National News – The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has nominated Murtala Garo as the new Deputy Governor, forwarding his name to the State House of Assembly on Wednesday for screening and confirmation.
The move follows the resignation of former deputy Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026, creating a constitutional vacancy.
According to the governor’s office, the nomination aligns with constitutional provisions that empower a sitting governor to appoint a replacement deputy.
Yusuf stated that the decision came after consultations with political stakeholders across the state, signaling an attempt to maintain internal balance within the ruling structure.
Garo, 48, is no newcomer to Kano politics. His résumé spans roles including local government chairman, commissioner, and party organiser, positioning him as an experienced hand.
Notably, he was also a deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, suggesting this nomination may be both a reward for loyalty and a strategic consolidation of political alliances.
Reactions across Kano have been mixed but largely pragmatic.
Some party loyalists view the choice as stabilising, citing Garo’s grassroots experience and administrative exposure.
Others, however, interpret the move through a more political lens, arguing it reflects ongoing power recalibration ahead of future electoral cycles.
The timing is also significant. With shifting alliances and rising political tensions nationally, Kano—one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states—remains a key battleground.
Observers suggest the appointment could strengthen Yusuf’s grip on governance while also sending a message to rival factions within and outside his party.
If confirmed by the Assembly, Garo’s immediate challenge will be to step into a role that demands both loyalty and independent leadership.
Beyond filling a vacancy, his emergence may shape policy direction, political negotiations, and succession calculations in Kano’s evolving political landscape.
