National News – The Kano State Government has renewed its commitment to press freedom and ethical journalism as part of activities marking the 2026 World Press Freedom Day.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 3, and signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, the administration of Governor Abba Yusuf reiterated its support for an independent and responsible media landscape.

The government explained that the commemoration serves as an opportunity to reflect on the role of the press in shaping society, especially at a time when information flows rapidly across digital platforms.

It noted that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” highlights the responsibility of journalists in fostering unity, stability, and sustainable development within the state and beyond.

According to the statement, the administration has consistently positioned itself as media-friendly by promoting transparency and maintaining open channels of communication with journalists.

It revealed that regular dialogue with media stakeholders has been institutionalised, alongside deliberate efforts to support the growth of digital journalism and adapt to the evolving media environment.

The government also made clear its stance against any form of intimidation or suppression of journalists, assuring practitioners that their rights and professional duties would be protected.

It added that recognition from the Nigeria Union of Journalists as a “Journalist-Friendly” government reflects ongoing efforts to build trust and collaboration with the media.

While reaffirming its support for press freedom, the administration stressed the importance of accuracy and professionalism in reporting.

It warned that the spread of misinformation and fake news poses a serious threat to peace and public trust, urging journalists to remain objective and development-focused in their work.

To strengthen the media’s ability to perform its constitutional role, the government pledged to improve access to timely and reliable information while prioritising the welfare of journalists across the state.

It maintained that a free press must work in partnership with society to drive growth and accountability.

The statement concluded with a call for media organisations and practitioners to uphold integrity and contribute meaningfully to peace and development, while the government continues to provide an enabling environment for responsible journalism.
