National News – King Charles III will deliver a historic address to the United States Congress during his first state visit to the US as monarch, scheduled from April 27.

The visit, announced by Buckingham Palace, highlights the long-standing diplomatic, cultural, and political ties between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Accompanied by Queen Camilla, the king is expected to engage top US leaders and participate in key ceremonial events.

The address to Congress, confirmed by US House Speaker Mike Johnson, will take place on April 28 in Washington, D.C.

This marks the first time a British monarch has addressed the US legislature since Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991 following the Gulf War.

The speech is expected to emphasise shared democratic values, historic alliances, and evolving global partnerships.

During the four-day visit, King Charles will meet with Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a private tea session, followed by a formal state dinner and military review.

The trip comes amid diplomatic tensions between the US and UK over the Iran conflict, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirming the importance of the visit in maintaining long-term bilateral relations.

After Washington, the royal couple will travel to New York to honour victims of the September 11 attacks by meeting first responders and bereaved families.

They will also attend events promoting cultural exchange and youth development through The King’s Trust.

The tour continues to Virginia, where Charles will join celebrations marking the anniversary of the 1776 Declaration of Independence, before concluding in Bermuda on May 1.

Buckingham Palace says the visit aims to strengthen “people-to-people connections” and reinforce diplomatic cooperation.

However, the trip comes amid controversy involving Prince Andrew’s links to Jeffrey Epstein, with calls for the king to meet survivors.

Palace sources say such meetings are not possible due to ongoing legal considerations.
