National News – Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers in Lagos, aiming to ease financial pressure amid rising living costs.

The announcement was made on Friday, May 1, 2026, during the International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, the governor said the temporary wage boost would apply specifically for the month of May to support workers facing economic strain.

The decision comes in response to persistent economic challenges, including increased fuel prices, inflation, and global economic pressures affecting Nigeria.

According to the state government, the wage award is designed to cushion the impact on civil servants, teachers, healthcare workers, and other public employees who play a vital role in sustaining Lagos’ economy.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that workers remain the backbone of the state’s growth and development.

He highlighted how their daily contributions ensure the smooth running of government operations and services.

The governor also acknowledged key issues affecting workers, particularly housing affordability and transportation difficulties, noting that these challenges directly impact productivity and quality of life.

To address these concerns, the Lagos State Government has continued investing in affordable housing schemes, including rent-to-own options that require minimal initial payment.

Additionally, ongoing expansion of rail infrastructure is expected to improve commuting, reduce travel time, and enhance overall efficiency for workers across the state.

The governor further assured that pension payments to retirees remain a priority, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to worker welfare even beyond active service.

He also reiterated the government’s willingness to maintain dialogue with labour unions to ensure policies reflect workers’ needs.

The Head of Service, Bode Agoro, added that a motivated workforce is essential for effective service delivery and sustainable development, reinforcing the importance of the wage intervention.
