National News – A heated disagreement has emerged among federal lawmakers over the proposed creation of Anioma State, with strong divisions centering on the proposed state capital and the political alignment of the new state.
The debate involves Senator Ned Nwoko and House member Ikenga Ugochinyere, who have expressed differing views on where the state capital should be located and how the proposal fits into the long-standing demand for equity in Nigeria’s geo-political structure.
declared that Anioma State would be created with Asaba as its capital, adding that the National Assembly supports the proposal spearheaded by Senator Nwoko.
He suggested that the move would spur development and balance regional interests.
However, opposition emerged when Ugochinyere insisted that any additional state must primarily benefit the South-East by addressing its under-representation.
He argued that the proposed state should be positioned within the South-East and that its capital should not be located outside the region.
He further noted that support from the South-East would depend on alignment with a broader regional agenda.
Nwoko maintains that Anioma shares strong cultural and linguistic ties with the Igbo, arguing that the proposed state could help address historic political and economic imbalances.
The debate has intensified as stakeholders weigh the potential implications for representation, regional identity, and resource allocation.
