National News – Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, have pleaded not guilty to a new five-count charge involving alleged illegal possession of firearms and terrorism-related offences.

The case, filed by the Federal Government, was heard at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the defendants were re-arraigned following an amended charge submitted on April 14, 2026.

The charges stem from events said to have occurred in December 2025 in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

Prosecutors allege that the duo unlawfully possessed a Sturm Magnum firearm, live cartridges, and expended ammunition without a valid licence.

Authorities claim these actions were linked to preparations for terrorism, violating provisions of Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Firearms Act.

During proceedings, prosecution counsel Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN) requested the court to replace the earlier charge with the amended version, enabling the defendants to take a fresh plea.

Defence counsel Shaibu Arua (SAN) confirmed receipt of the updated charge, after which Justice Joyce Abdulmalik struck out the previous case and ordered a new arraignment.
Both defendants maintained their innocence, pleading not guilty to all counts.

The defence further requested that the court allow them to remain on the bail earlier granted, a request that was not opposed by the prosecution.

Justice Abdulmalik subsequently approved the continuation of bail and adjourned the matter for trial on May 26 and June 16, 2026.

The court will determine whether the alleged possession of firearms and ammunition without a licence constitutes preparation for terrorism as claimed by the prosecution.

This case continues to draw national attention due to Malami’s former role as Nigeria’s chief law officer and the seriousness of the allegations.
