National News – A joint delegation from Nigeria’s National Assembly Committees on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun an inspection of key infrastructure projects in Cross River State.
The visit, led by Senate Committee Chairman Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong and House Committee counterpart Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, alongside NDDC Managing Director Dr Samuel Ogbuku, took place on Wednesday in Calabar.
The lawmakers assessed the ongoing reconstruction of the Odukpani Junction–Okom Ita–Uyanga–Ehom Road to determine its quality, progress, and impact on local communities.
The inspection, according to Ekpenyong, is part of the National Assembly’s constitutional oversight responsibility aimed at ensuring accountability and value for public funds.
He stated that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s push under President Bola Tinubu to deliver meaningful development across the Niger Delta region.
The lawmakers emphasised that the road project is crucial for improving connectivity, boosting agricultural productivity, and supporting economic activities in Cross River and the wider South-South zone.
Ekpenyong explained that Akamkpa Local Government Area, a major hub for construction materials and home to large-scale cement production, plays a vital role in regional development.
He noted that properly executed NDDC projects would enhance transportation, ease movement of goods, and stimulate investment opportunities.
The delegation stressed that projects must translate into tangible benefits for residents rather than exist only on paper.
Speaking during the tour, Ibori-Suenu commended the level of work done so far but insisted on strict adherence to quality standards and timely completion.
She highlighted the importance of collaboration between the NDDC, contractors, and host communities to ensure sustainability and long-term impact.
The inspection team reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring of NDDC interventions across the Niger Delta, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and delivery of people-oriented projects.
