National News – Nigeria international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is facing uncertainty over his future after a proposed move to South African giants Kaizer Chiefs hit a major roadblock.
The deal, which had generated excitement among fans and football analysts, now appears unlikely following the quicker-than-expected recovery of the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, Brandon Petersen.
Nwabali has been without a club since February after mutually terminating his contract with Chippa United.
His exit from the South African Premier Division side raised expectations that he already had offers lined up and would soon secure a move to another club.
However, nearly two months later, the 29-year-old shot-stopper is still searching for a new team.
Reports earlier suggested that Kaizer Chiefs were strongly considering the Nigerian goalkeeper as a replacement for Petersen, who had undergone surgery due to a health issue.
The injury was initially expected to keep the South African goalkeeper out for several months, forcing the club to explore options for an experienced replacement before the end of the season.
However, new developments have changed the situation significantly.
Petersen is now expected to return to training much sooner than originally predicted, reducing the urgency for the club to sign another goalkeeper.
Sources within the club also indicate that Petersen remains a key figure in the dressing room and leadership structure at Naturena.
The club is reportedly considering extending Petersen’s contract, which is set to expire this summer, rather than replacing him.
This decision further weakens the chances of Nwabali securing a move to the Amakhosi in the near future.
The setback comes as a disappointment for the Nigerian goalkeeper, who gained continental recognition during Nigeria’s impressive run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
His performances during the tournament established him as one of Africa’s most reliable goalkeepers and attracted attention from several clubs.
For now, Nwabali remains a free agent while he continues to explore other opportunities that could revive his club career.
