National News – Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has pledged to declare outright war on terrorists if elected Nigeria’s president, rejecting negotiation as a strategy to tackle insecurity.

He made this known on Monday during an interview on Arise TV, while reacting to the recent killing of soldiers, including a senior officer, in Benisheikh, Borno State.

Obi stated that no responsible nation would allow such attacks without decisive retaliation, stressing that his administration would prioritise strong military action.

He explained that during his tenure as governor, he sought approval from former President Olusegun Obasanjo to implement firm security strategies that yielded results in Anambra State.

According to him, testimonies from security officials, including former Inspector-General of Police Abubakar, confirmed that incidents of major crimes such as robbery and kidnapping significantly reduced during his administration.

Obi said this success demonstrated that proactive leadership and coordination among security agencies could restore safety nationwide.

Addressing the root causes of insecurity, Obi noted that the crisis is a result of years of leadership failure, weak institutions, and neglect of youth development, education, and governance systems.

He emphasised that while military force is necessary, it must be combined with long-term reforms focused on justice, accountability, and rebuilding public trust.

On how he plans to execute his strategy, Obi said he would adopt a dual approach: immediate force against criminal elements and simultaneous investment in governance structures.

He also highlighted the need for collaboration with key political figures across regions, including Nasir el-Rufai and Rabiu Kwankwaso, noting his intention to engage more actively in northern Nigeria.

He concluded by promising hands-on leadership, assuring Nigerians that his administration would be visible, responsive, and committed to restoring national security.
