National News – Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has criticised contractor Peculiar Consults over delay in Warri City Stadium reconstruction after missing December deadline.
The inspection took place in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, when Oborevwori expressed dissatisfaction over project progress and substandard cladding.
He stated the contract required completion by December 2025 but it was still ongoing in April 2026.
He noted pitch quality acceptable but condemned cladding as temporary and substandard, demanding durable materials.
The governor warned contract adherence would be enforced and further failure exposed publicly.
The Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau praised the playing surface and said stadium may host matches by September, while Shaibu described turf as exceptional.
Oborevwori also reaffirmed Delta State’s sports infrastructure agenda, explaining renovation was preferred over new construction due to land constraints and community preservation around the stadium.
He added plans to renovate Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba after Warri project completion.
Stakeholders have urged faster completion as Warri Stadium remains a key venue for grassroots football, talent development, and national competitions in Nigeria’s South-South region.
Residents and sports enthusiasts in Delta State expect the upgraded facility to boost local economy, create jobs, and revive Warri’s historic football culture.
Government officials insist that strict monitoring will continue until final delivery, with penalties for non-compliance.
The project remains a flagship sports infrastructure initiative under the Delta State development agenda.
This development underscores the administration’s commitment to accountability, infrastructure renewal, and elevating Delta State’s status as a leading sports hub in Nigeria.
