National News – The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed it successfully contained a suspected gas leak along the Agoro/Okunowa Road axis of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on May 15, 2026, restoring calm and ensuring public safety after emergency response operations.
The incident, which occurred on May 15, 2026, was triggered by suspected methane emissions detected in parts of Ijebu-Ode during routine patrol operations by police officers.
Tactical teams from the Obalende Division were immediately deployed to secure affected communities, prevent panic, and coordinate evacuation efforts across multiple schools and residential areas.
Several schools, including Our Ladies Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, and other institutions in Imosan and Obalende, were affected.
Students and staff were swiftly evacuated to nearby hospitals and medical facilities for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded, while victims are responding positively.
The police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babasayi, noted that security operatives ensured order and coordinated emergency response with health officials.
Preliminary environmental assessments indicated elevated methane gas levels in the area, though the exact source is still under investigation by environmental experts and relevant agencies.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, ordered heightened surveillance and continuous monitoring to prevent recurrence.
Residents were advised to avoid open flames and report any unusual gas odours immediately.
Authorities assured the public that the area remains calm and under control.
They say the likely cause is methane emission, although investigations are ongoing to establish the precise source.
