National News – The Association of Health Records and Information Management Practitioners of Nigeria (HIM professionals) in Ogun State has called for urgent digital transformation of healthcare delivery, advocating adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and integrated Health Information Systems (HIS) across public hospitals.

The call was made in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday, April 19, 2026, during the 2026 Health Information Professionals (HIP) Week themed “Guardians of Health Information: Driving Healthcare Transformation Through Technology.”

The association, led by Chairperson Rasheedat Obabiyi and Secretary Kayode Paul, said health records officers are critical to patient safety, accurate documentation, research, and evidence-based policy making.

They explained that the absence of modern digital systems slows healthcare efficiency, limits data access, and increases errors in patient management.

The group also urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently review the outdated scheme of service affecting career progression, recognition, and motivation of health information professionals.

According to them, full deployment of EMR, EHR, and HIS will improve service delivery, enhance confidentiality, and support faster clinical decisions.

They added that capacity building and investment in digital infrastructure are necessary to align Ogun State healthcare with global standards.

Stakeholders believe that implementing EMR and EHR will reduce paperwork, improve speed of diagnosis, and strengthen national health planning.

They also note that reviewing the scheme of service will address long-standing career stagnation and encourage professional excellence among practitioners.

The association reaffirmed commitment to supporting government efforts while calling for immediate policy action and sustained investment in health technology.

Overall, the health records professionals emphasized that digital reform is essential for a resilient and efficient healthcare system in Nigeria.

Officials further urged collaboration between government and private sector for sustainable health information modernization.
