National News – Maduka Okoye has expressed strong enthusiasm over his return to the Super Eagles, declaring his ambition to secure a consistent place in the squad.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who plays for Udinese Calcio, made this known on Wednesday following his recent recall to the national team setup after missing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Okoye described his call-up as a significant personal and professional milestone, emphasizing that representing Nigeria remains a top priority.

According to him, the opportunity to return has reignited his determination to perform at the highest level and earn more invitations in the future.

The goalkeeper featured in Nigeria’s 2-1 international friendly win against Iran in Antalya during the March break but was unable to play in the subsequent 2-2 draw with Jordan due to a thigh injury sustained in training.

Despite that setback, he has responded impressively at club level in Italy.

In recent weeks, Okoye delivered an outstanding performance in Udinese’s 3-0 victory over AC Milan, keeping a clean sheet and earning a place in the Serie A Team of the Week.

His composed display set him apart among several goalkeepers who also recorded shutouts during the round.

So far this season, Okoye has registered eight clean sheets in 24 Serie A appearances and recently achieved three consecutive shutouts for the first time since joining Udinese in 2023.

His growing consistency highlights his rising influence at the club and strengthens his case for a more prominent role with the national team.

Having earned 19 caps since making his debut against Brazil in 2019, Okoye now faces stiff competition for the number one position.

Rivals such as Arthur Okonkwo and Stanley Nwabali continue to push for selection, making the battle for the starting spot highly competitive.

However, with his current form and confidence, Okoye appears well-positioned to secure more opportunities and possibly establish himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
