National News – Organisers of the prestigious Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have announced that the 2026 edition will now take place on May 30 instead of the earlier scheduled May 23, as part of efforts to deliver a safer and more competitive event in Edo State, Nigeria.
The decision, confirmed on Monday by Pamodzi Sports Marketing, affects elite runners, local participants, and spectators preparing for one of Africa’s most recognised road races.
According to the organisers, the one-week postponement was necessary to finalise critical logistics, including expanded medical coverage, strengthened security arrangements, and improved spectator facilities.
Race Director Zack Amodu explained that the adjustment is a proactive measure aimed at enhancing the overall experience for athletes and fans, rather than a response to any crisis or disruption.
He noted that preparations for the race have reached an advanced stage, but the additional time will ensure all upgraded systems meet international standards.
Amodu added that the event’s medical director recently completed a World Athletics certification programme in Madrid, positioning the Okpekpe race as the first in Nigeria to feature a certified medical director under the global body’s new directive.
The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, held annually in Okpekpe town, has grown into a globally recognised competition, attracting elite runners from across continents.
It was the first road race in Nigeria and West Africa to receive World Athletics Label status and to have its course officially measured by a certified expert.
Organisers emphasised that the new date will not disrupt participation but instead elevate the race’s quality, ensuring better safety, organisation, and global appeal.
With athletes, officials, and fans expected from various countries, the May 30 event is set to reinforce Nigeria’s position on the international athletics stage.
