National News – Frank Onyeka has helped Coventry City F.C. secure promotion to the English Premier League after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers F.C. on Friday night.
The decisive encounter took place at Ewood Park, where Coventry needed just one point to confirm their return to England’s top flight after 25 years.
The equaliser, scored in the 84th minute by Bobby Thomas, sealed the club’s promotion with three games remaining in the season.
Onyeka, who featured for 62 minutes before being substituted, delivered a disciplined midfield performance that proved crucial to the result.
The Nigerian international completed 26 of his 32 passes, achieving an 81 percent accuracy rate, while also contributing defensively with tackles, clearances, and ball recoveries.
His physical presence and tactical awareness helped maintain balance during a tense match, highlighting why he has become a key figure in Coventry’s squad.
The 27-year-old joined Coventry on loan from Brentford F.C. in January, seeking regular playing time.
Since then, he has made 12 appearances, starting 11 matches, and quickly established himself as an integral part of the team’s promotion push.
His move included a clause that makes the transfer permanent if promotion was achieved, a condition now activated.
Coventry’s journey back to the Premier League marks a remarkable turnaround.
The club was competing in League Two as recently as 2018 but has steadily risen through the ranks.
Under manager Frank Lampard, the team transformed into one of the most consistent sides in the Championship, overcoming past disappointments, including a 2023 play-off final loss.
