National News – Former Emmanuel Petit has backed Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to solve Chelsea FC’s long-standing No. 9 problem, saying the forward has the mentality, strength, and personality to succeed in the Premier League.
Petit made the remarks on May 1, 2026, while discussing Osimhen’s future and Chelsea’s attacking struggles since the departure of Didier Drogba.
The ex-midfielder highlighted Chelsea’s inconsistency in the striker role over the years, noting that several high-profile signings have failed to replicate Drogba’s impact.
According to Petit, Osimhen, currently playing for Galatasaray after leaving Napoli, possesses the aggression and resilience required to thrive in English football.
Petit expressed surprise that Osimhen opted for Turkey instead of moving directly to England after his successful spell in Italy.
However, he maintained that the striker still has time to make a major Premier League move and establish himself among the elite forwards.
He also pointed to Osimhen’s physicality and relentless playing style, describing him as a “pain for defenders” who thrives under pressure.
Despite past issues at Napoli, including reported disagreements with club leadership, Petit believes those experiences have strengthened the Nigerian international’s character.
Chelsea, still searching for a dependable goal scorer, continue to monitor Osimhen as speculation grows about a future transfer.
If signed, Petit insists the forward could finally break what many fans describe as the club’s “number nine curse.”
