National News – Governor Bassey Otu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of students and a staff member of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), who lost their lives in a fatal road accident.
The incident occurred on Friday night along the Calabar–Itu Highway in Odukpani Local Government Area, as the victims were returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The crash involved a coaster bus conveying about 24 students, mostly members of the Students’ Union Government, which collided with a container truck whose driver reportedly fled the scene.
In a statement released on Sunday, Otu described the incident as devastating, lamenting the loss of promising young lives and a dedicated staff member.
He noted that the tragedy has thrown Cross River State into mourning, as families, friends, and the university community grapple with grief.
Among the deceased were Solomon Uya, the SUG Director of Sports; Lucky Erim, a Chemistry student and faculty president; Favour Darlington of the Educational Management Department; and Mr Anthony Arikpo, the driver and university staff member.
The governor extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the UNICROSS community, acknowledging the emotional toll of the loss.
He assured that the state government stands in solidarity with those affected and will continue to engage relevant authorities to respond effectively to the incident.
He also prayed for the quick recovery of injured survivors currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, while efforts are ongoing to locate the fleeing truck driver.
The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and transport conditions on major highways in Nigeria.
